INSPIRED TUESDAY –
Your weekly pause for reflection, to inspire and be inspired.
It sounds simple. But when we take it in deeply, it can be profoundly freeing.
How often do we replay a conversation, an action (or inaction), thinking “I should have known better. I should have done it differently.”?
I know I do.
My mind can circle around specific situations, looping through “what if” and “if only.” It’s as if I believe that by thinking about it, I can somehow change the past – or at least feel better about it.
But what I’m engaging with isn’t the actual moment. That moment is long gone. What I’m experiencing is the memory of that moment – a thought-made version of the past, shaped by my current mood, my current state of mind, and filtered through layers of feelings and sensations.
That’s the tricky part. It feels so real. So vivid. But it isn’t the event itself. It’s a recreated version of it, generated by the creative power of Thought – fluid, alive, ever-shifting.
And still, we beat ourselves up for not having acted from the clarity we may have now.
But if we had known differently, we would have done differently.
Clarity is now’s gift. We didn’t have it then. In that moment, our best looked different.
What if we allowed ourselves to truly see that?
To trust that we did the best we could with the level of understanding, presence, and awareness we had at that time?
This doesn’t mean we can’t learn from the past – of course we can. The Now can offer insight and perspective. But we don’t have to get lost in the maze of mental rumination, believing we can rewrite what’s already gone.
We can return home to this moment. To fresh thought. To gentleness with ourselves.
Because it’s from here that new choices, new understanding, and deep compassion arise.
If this speaks to you today, I’d love for you to see your past self with softer eyes.
